"If we succeed, the country is ours. It is immense in extent, and fertile in its soil and will amply reward our toil. If we fail, death in the cause of liberty and humanity is not cause for shuddering. Our rifles are by our side, and choice guns they are, we know what awaits us, and are prepared to meet it."

Letter from Daniel William Cloud of Kentucky, a defender of the Alamo, en route to San Antonio, dated Dec. 26, 1835.

THE STORY BEHIND THE TRAVIS DRAWING
COMPLETE TEXT OF MESSAGE FROM MARK BARNETT

Attached to this e-mail is a "new drawing" of "William B. Travis", commander at the Texas Alamo on March 6, 1836. Thisew new drawing is based on the "Wiley Martin" sketch, that was done in Dec of 1835. It is the only known image that Travis ever posed for. Martin was a friend of Travis, but could not draw all that well. That's why the Martin image was redone and corrected by Texas based artist "Mark Barnett" on Oct 7, 2008.

Alamo HeroesNow, the new image is attached to this e-mail for you to have, share, and use, free of charge. Some Alamo experts believe that this new Barnett image of Travis is the closest likeness we have to what he really looked like. Did you know Travis had reddish brown hair and died at the age of 26? There are many other old images of Travis that are used on websites today, maybe (such as yours), that are incorrect. The fact is, the most popular image of Travis ever painted was done by an artist named "Mc Ardle". Historical Map of the Alamo

He was not an American born artist and wasn't even born until 1836....The same year that Travis died. Most of his work was done in the late 1800's and early 1900's. He almost always used photos or pictures from books or a (stand in person), or a (look a like) people to paint from. The famous image of Travis he painted with the Alamo in the background was done using a different man as a (stand in person) for Travis. Travis had been dead for years and there was (only) the "Wiley Martin" sketch for anyone to go by.

Travis also did not wear a military uniform or a military jacket at the Alamo. He did have a military jacket (ordered to be made) for him, but he never got it in time. His body was found on the North Wall wearing a gray jacket...no star on the collar, no badges. al2Mc Ardle made up the image to look the way he wanted it to look and many artist have copied his image of Travis since then. Wiley Martin didn't do that, he drew Travis wearing his lawyer suite and dated it Dec 1835. Wiley's drawing was the real deal. The only problem is, Wiley's drawing wasn't that good....That's why it was redone, so you could see a (closer likeness) to what Travis (might of) or (could of) looked like. The attached drawing is the closest image we have to date.
